Number 1: Good Governance in China
The quality of governance of a country is assessed against a normative framework of good governance which includes attributes such as transparency, responsibility, accountability, participation, and responsiveness to the needs of the people. For the incorporation of these standards, several countries have advanced major reforms of their legal systems to create a more competitive legal environment which aligns with these expectations. The papers in this number assess the effects, challenges, and tensions that have emerged in local settings from these reforms and transformations, and provide policy recommendations to advance the attributes of good governance. With special attention to China, some papers propose ways to advance the expectations of this normative framework, while staying committed to the unique characteristics of their society.
